The Chicks Are Here!!

We were able to watch through the viewing window and many of us actually saw a chick hatch from its egg!!
After it fluffed up....
At first, they stayed near the warming light to dry out and get fluffy...
Many were understandably drowsy...


Today they were old enough to put on the carpet with us so we could really observe.
Pepper thinks Logan is his mother...he goes to him every time he is out and won't leave him.

So fascinating!



Ask the children to tell you why we have some yellow chicks and why some are black :)

Drum Assembly

The PIE sponsored an assembly for us today! It was a steel drum presentation that had everyone moving to the different rhythms!

Our first egg was hatching!

We Love Science!!

We are having so much fun learning about life cycles! We are learning that scientists have fun and interesting jobs! Our eggs are still plugging along (we hope!!).....hatch day should be Monday, April 26.
We have also been studying about the life cycle of a frog. Today one of our friends brought in a jar filled with tadpoles he found in a local creek.
We are also watching the life cycles of various plants, grown from seeds. If you are a mom, please do not look at the plants :) Braden was very popular today, due to his tadpole bounty!
We are hoping the tadpoles will survive in our classroom until they grow legs and arms so we can release them in the creek behind the school.

Puppet Shows!

I have a puppet collection that I share with our class. The kids love to write their own plays and enlist other students to act it out with the puppets. Alternately, they will read a book and the director will organize the puppet acting.
Last week, Frog and Toad stories were very popular.
We try to find a couple times a week for playwriting, when the children can write, practice, and perform.

Pajama Day!

I forgot to post our pajama picture! We have a good news jar that begins empty....whenever the students earn a 'gotcha' card from another teacher, they can put a pom-pom in our 'good news' jar. It took a long time, but we filled it! The children voted to have a pajama party...so on April 1 (fittingly) they wore their pajamas to school and brought a favorite stuffed animal to be their reading partner for the day.

Our eggs are here!

Our eggs showed up on Tuesday morning! Our incubator is a pseudo nest that we are so crossing our fingers and hoping with all of our might that it is successful!! Mrs. Rumple (a third grade teacher) is mentoring us through the project (she hatches eggs every year in her classroom) and has checked on us often.
We have to keep the incubator at exactly 99 1/2 degrees. If I didn't have gray hair already, I would when this project is over!! I am completely stressed! However...Yay for automatic egg turners in the incubator!

Vocab Posters

Every week, we take five words from our reading unit and work in groups to illustrate them. The students take this time seriously and work well together to come up with a vision to describe their word.
We come up with various ways to divide into groups. This day, we called off numbers in line and all the ones were one group, all the twos, etc... It is nice to see the children work well with all of their peers.
