Important Dates!

The firefighters will be here on Wednesday, October 18. We always look forward to their visit! They will teach us to Stop, Drop, and Roll...show us the fire truck...and sometimes they even let us try out the fire hose!

(Just found out the fire fighters have postponed. I'll post the new date when I find out.)

Gotcha Party

Once a quarter, we have a schoolwide GOTCHA party. During the school year, the children earn GOTCHA bucks when they are caught doing good things such as showing respect to others, property, etc... At the party, everyone wears their GOTCHA t-shirts, has a fun snack, and then can buy teacher trading cards with their GOTCHA bucks. Each card costs five GOTCHAs....with a mystery teacher card (unveiled at the party) that costs 15 GOTCHAS. Afterward, they get an extra recess and stand in lines to have the teachers autograph their cards.
So much fun!!

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day was busy and fun! Some of the children brought in homemade leprechaun traps in the hopes of a capture....so they could learn where his gold is...
While the children were at P.E. the leprechaun sneaked into our room and left a message. Later, when they went to lunch, he sneaked in again and danced on their traps leaving a trail of gold glitter and turning over a chair or two.
He left some gold treats, decorations, and a gotcha card for the students.

The leprechaun left another note that the children loved reading!

Gingerbread Houses, oh my!!

Not sure how I ended up with a picture of my baby on here, but I can't figure out how to remove it!
I know it is completely ridiculous that I have not uploaded photos of our gingerbread house making party in December!!
Everyone donated such fun edible garnishes for our homes!!!
Everyone was quietly, seriously engaged in making their houses beautiful.

The students were allowed to take five candies at a time. They took some time to carefully decide what goodies to choose.

Love it!

Merry Belated Christmas!!

School Budget

As some of you may know, Illinois is in a huge budget crunch and the state education funds are taking a big hit. Govenor Quinn has a proposed budget and is willing to accept comments for a limited time. I would encourage any Illinois citizen to read it over and post a comment urging the governor to make education a priority in action, not just words.
(Please know I am non-partisan...just wanting everyone to be aware of the potential cuts the state schools are facing.)
Here is the governor's link:

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' birthday! We had a great day celebrating some of his books and noticing the great rhymes that he came up with. We especially liked:
Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!
Green Eggs and Ham
The Cat in the Hat
Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now?!
Oh, The Places You'll Go
Many of the students brought in some of their favorites and shared them with the class during our independent reading time.
We also made and snacked on Green Eggs and Ham...20 of our 21 students loved them! (Instead of the unappealing green food coloring, we chose to top our eggs with green, chopped flat parsley...I was pleasantly surprised at the number of children willing to try!)
